Local group is hoping to end unnecessary euthanasia at San Luis Obispo animal shelter

A local group is on a mission to save animals in San Luis Obispo County.

Animal shelter adoption partners is launching its “Join the Pack” campaign. The group is urging all pet owners to put a visible id on their pet and have them spayed or neutered.

According to the humane society an estimated three to four million cats and dogs are euthanized each year in the United States.

Bob Barker has been saying it for years, and now Animal Shelter Adoption Partners is launching its “Join the Pack” campaign with the motto, “If you love em tag em.”

“The owner will put a tag on their animal, a visible ID tag, and will spay and neuter,” Terry Parry the founder of Animal Shelter Adoption Partners said.

She believes this simple procedure will keep pets out of the already overcrowded shelters and alive.

“We can’t control the space issue at the shelter. We’ve got 48 spaces maybe. If the animal control officer comes in with 12 animals and we’re full, somebody has to die. It’s a hard decision to make but space is space,” Parry said.

Local businesses are making it easier to “Love em and tag em.” Tails Boutique and Lemos Feed and Pet Supply in San Luis Obispo are offering discounts for id tags.

“When we learned just how much having an ID tag on an animal can save when it comes to keeping space in the humane societies, we were really surprised at the staggering number that was,” Paul Benedix the general manager at Lemos said.

Benedix says he is making the price just right for the id tags because of that.

For more information on “Join the Pack” and how you can get coupons for discounted pet ID’s you can go to news links on www.ksby.com.

Organizers say the most important thing to put on your pet’s ID is your phone number.

ABQ promotes free spay and neuter plan

Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry says it’s time to stop killing so many unwanted pets and disclosed a new plan coinciding on National Spay and Neuter Day to offer low income families vouchers to get their pets fixed for free.

Craig Mabray, a vet for the city, said out of the 26,000 thousand pets taken to the citys animal shelters last year, more than a third of them did not get adopted.

Subsequently, over 10,000 animals were euthanized.

There is one solution, and it is spay and neuter programs, said Peggy Weigle, Director of the Animal Humane Society.

Victoria Stilwell, author and host of “It’s Me or the Dog

Purina Pets for People Presents Top 10 Permanent Pet Adoption Checklist Victoria Stilwell, author and host of “It’s Me or the Dog,” offers advice from the checklist as well as her own pet adoption tips According to the American Veterinarian Medical Association, 5-7 million pets enter shelters every year. An overwhelming majority of these dogs and cats are not bad pets, but rather victims of unfortunate circumstances or a lack of education on the part of their former owners, who may not have understood all that goes into caring for a pet.

A recent Purina Pets for Pet People survey of more than 180 Adopt-A-Pet animal shelters and rescue organizations nationwide identified the Top 10 most important things pet adopters can do to make sure they have a positive and successful adoption experience. According to the survey, the number one step a prospective pet owner can take to ensure a permanent adoption is to make a real commitment to care for the new pet for its entire life, just as they would with a child. Additional permanent adoption tips on the Top 10 list can be found at Adopt-A-Pet.com.

Prospective pet owners can download the Permanent Pet Adoption Checklist and enjoy a video featuring Victoria Stilwell, author and host of “It’s Me or the Dog,” offering advice from the checklist as well as her own pet adoption tips.
