How to tell if a kitten is healthy at a pet store/shelter?

Anyone know any signs that a kitten is healthy or unhealthy when first seeing it at a store? We’re buying a kitten this week at an adoption agency I think, and I would like to know. Thanks!

As long as the kitten came from a shelter or a rescue group that was in a store like Petsmart/Petco – that’s fine.

But don’t buy a kitten out of a normal pet store. They are from puppy and kitten mills or backyard breeders and unhealthy and not socialized.

In general, look for clean ears, eyes, no sneezing and a healthy attitude of wanting to play – not sitting back in the corner (usually a cat doesn’t feel well if its just sitting/hunched up).

The fur should look and feel clean with a little shine (but until the kitten gets good food, the coat may not be really shiny)

What do i do if i want to adopt a pet but my parents wont let me?

I want to adopt a dog but my parents say they dont have the money

If they do not have the money to adopt, regardless of how much you want a pet, they also require money to care for. Wait until the money and time is available. It is not fair to adopt a pet that you will not be able to care for in the long run.

How do you start your own animal rescue?

I love animals and in the future want to start my own rescue for cats and dogs, I don’t think it’s fair what some animals have to go through. Even though there are pounds that some dogs and cats do get adopted from, but if they don’t get adopted in so long they euthanize them. Which is not fair at all.
Please someone help me to know how I can start my own. It can save animals lives.
Thanks.

well…
first off you need a large space, with a fenced in backyard, so dogs can run. you can apply for federal and state grants, to pay for things like kennels, food, and medical care. you will need a good vet, talk to some in your area, they could give you a discount. file for a non-profit 501c3 (or something like that) which will give you a BIG tax break, but you have to be careful, you cannot have employees (but you can have volunteers), or make people pay for animals (instead of ‘Puppy: $50.00′ it would need to be phrased ‘Puppy: Donation of $50.00 or more), also you can give people tax write-offs for ‘donating’ which could drive more people to your rescue. Advertise, start a website telling about your rescue, have a spot there which people can donate. I’ll post more things later.

Where is the best place to get a dog trained/obedience classes?

I have a 1 year old puppy and she needs training and/or obedience classes or else I have to get rid of her. She chews on our outdoor furniture. She sometimes gets a temper like a pit bull and goes crazy.
I have no idea where to take her or what kind of classes she needs.

Call your local animal control office to see if they have any recommendations. Check your city parks & rec department. many times they have reasonable obedience classes. If you happen to see someone with a particularly well behaved dog, ask them who they train with. Go to an obedience trial. ask the competitors. Many of the competitors work with trainers who also train for everyday people. Find someone with years experience. I don’t recomend those trainers who have on line certifications as dog trainers.

Go watch a class or two to see how the trainer trains. Does he/she use methods you are comfortable with. How do the dogs respond to him/her. How quickly does he/she take charge and resolve a problem dog. The best classes are those that teach you to train your own dog. Personally, I care more for how the trainer interacts with the dogs than how well he/she interacts with the people. Some of the best dog trainers that I have learned the most from, had great dog skills, but sometimes a bit shy on their people skills. The good ones tend to say it like it is and not sugar coat.

Also, some really good trainers don’t advertise. They go by word of mouth. Also, some really good trainers are not always the most expensive. I really have no use for petsmart trainers.

i would like to volunteer at a pet shelter or something to do with animals any ideas?

i am 13 and looking for a good animal shelter place or whatever to volunteer with animals any ideas?
i live in winnipeg stvital any where near there

When I owned my pet store, we had volunteers come in to help socialize and play with the animals. You had to sit down and watch a few videos to learn about whatever area of the store you would be working. Then the shifts were only 2 hours long. You had to show us a good report card. Have written parents permission. It was a win win situation. You learned about the animals, the animals were loved. We had alot of students ask, and we could only take 2 per afternoon for an 8 week course. If there aren’t any in your area, you might suggest it.
I know veterinarians need walkers for the dogs boarding.

examples and explanations on how to stop killing in animal shelters?

hi, i am writing a research paper for school and i would like to know what you think are ways to stop the killing of animals in animal shelters. explanations would be amazing! thanks for all your help, and i will select a 10 point best answer.

The problem comes down to money. I am sure every shelter out there could switch to a no-kill shelter but the problem is most are non-profit so they have to go with what resources they have. If a shelter can only house 100 dogs and 100 cats, what are they supposed to do when new animals come in. Do they kill those animals because there is no space and no food? Do they keep the new animals and run the risk of having their facility shut down?

It is just a very hard situation to fix and unfortunatly it falls into the laps of the shelters and govt. INSTEAD it is the problem of the owners of these animals who allow them to breed even though they cannot keep them. Then people set their pets "free" and those pets breed and breed. Before you know it you have millions of unwanted animals.

In my personal opinion there needs to be tighter laws around breeding. They go after backyard breeders which is a good thinking but what about these people who keep 10 dogs as pets and allow them constantly breed only for some of the animals to die, some to be sold, some to run away. If people went to breed their animals, be it for money or just for them to have more dogs, I think they should have to be required to get and pay for a permit. The money of course would go to the shelters. Anyone found breedinng without a permit would be forced to have the animal "fixed" (unless it was a danger to the animal) and they would have to pay a fine. Again the money going to shelters.

I think in order to bring down the number with the millions of pets that are put down each year needs to start with the owners.
