you'll need lots of science and math. It would be best to excell in all subjects. Grammer is one. I just took my cat to the vet a few days ago, and if he talked like some of the people I see on the street - he surley wouldn't get my buisness. And you need to spell correctly.
You also need to have a real feel for animals. It's not something you can learn in a book. You either have it or you don't.

You will need some medical training as animals and people are a lot a like in that they have the same problems.

Well obviously a you don't get paid for a VOLUNTEEER position, but it would certainly be a good start to get your name around. Your high school counselor will be able to help you with college courses.

Good luck with it!

Always be kind to animals
morning noon and night
for animals have feelings too
and further more - they bite!
References :
This is a great question. I hope that you'll stick with your dream of becoming a vet!
In high school you will want to take as much biology as you can as well as anatomy and physiology. What you learn about human anatomy can be applied in many cases to animal anatomy. Make sure your teachers and guidance counselors know what field you want to major in so they can steer you toward electives and opportunities that will help you.
Volunteering mean you don't get paid but by all means, do it! You can look up the local animal shelters in the phone book. Many also have web sites. You might start at petfinder.org and look at pets for your area and see what the names of the shelters are in your area. A young lady I know volunteered for almost 2 years at one of our local shelters and she got credit for that once she went to vet school. She currently goes to a school in Delaware.
Another source of help would be a local vet. I'm sure if you called their office and explained what you want to do, they'd be happy to set up a little time to talk with you about what you should take.
Good luck!
References :
Take biology classes in High School. You can volunteer at a local animal shelter by calling them and seeing if they have openings. But they might not let you help out if you're under the age of 18, that's how it is in my state. You will not get paid for volunteer work, that's why it's called "volunteering". Once you get to college you'll do "pre-vet" then go onto veterinarian courses. In total you'll need 8 years of school before you can practice medicine on your own.

It's a lot easier to become a vet tech, but the pay isn't very good and the work is dirty.
References :
Former vet's aide at a local no-kill shelter.

You dont get paid for volunteer work. But if you want to go to vet school having a lot of experience and volunteer work looks great when you apply.

To become a vet, its a long process. You need to have good grades in high school to get into a good vet school, because it is pre-med.

You need to look for vet schools around the country, a good one i know in New York is called Wells College. They have a good pre-vet program. Once you look into different colleges you need to know information about the college and if its good or not.

You should have a guidance counselor at your school that can help you along the way and what you need to do in order to get in.

Good luck and I hope this helped.
References :
Take all the math and science you can. Veterinary medicine is reportedly harder then (people) medical school. Remember regular doctor only have to deal with one species when it comes to anatomy and such.

There are a lot of non-profits out there that need help with the care of animals they are trying to find homes for. The definition of "volunteer" is - no pay for it. If you need the income, apply for work at the different veterinary clinics in your area, and tell then why you want to work there. They may very well find something you can do while working your way through school. And you'll be learning at the same time.
References :
Well high school isn't really the place to study to become a vet, but I suppose take as many science classes as you can.

And just go to an animal shelter and ask them if you can volunteer every once in awhile. Tell them you're interested in becoming a vet.
References :
You're a woman. Being a doctor (or a vet) is inappropriate for your gender. Focus on marriage and family, and if you have to work, try to only work part time or at a job that's appropriate to your gender.
