Of the 1,000 shelters that replied to the National Council’s survey, 4.3 million animals were handled.
* In 1997 roughly 64% of the total number of animals that entered shelters were euthanized — approximately 2.7 million animals in just these 1,000 shelters. These animals may have been put down due to overcrowding, but may have been sick, aggressive, injured, or suffered something else.
* 56% of dogs and 71% of cats that enter animal shelters are euthanized. More cats are euthanized than dogs because they are more likely to enter a shelter without any owner identification.
* Only 15% of dogs and 2% of cats that enter animal shelters are reunited with their owners.
* 25% of dogs and 24% of cats that enter animal shelters are adopted.

" In 2003, Michigan shelters discharged 140,653 dogs: Of these, 56,972 (40%) were euthanized; 40,005 (28%) were adopted. This annual euthanasia rate is 2.6% of the estimated 2003 Michigan dog population. Michigan shelters discharged 134,405 cats in 2003: 76,321 (57%) by euthanasia and (24%) by adoption. The estimated ratio of euthanized cats to cats who had owners was 3.1%. Small shelters and privately owned shelters were associated with higher adoption rates. "

I was just wondering how the people at the animal shelters put down the animals? Do they feel pain from the process and do you think they know what is happening to them?
Lastly have any of them fought you if they knew what you were about to do, got free and ran for freedom? Not likely huh?
Most shelters use lethal injection. Its actually an overdose of an anesthetic agent. The animal can struggle, but it is NOT because they know what you’re about to do. Some pets do not like to be restrained and some are very fearful of strangers. The injection does not hurt, but some times it can be difficult to locate a strong vein to do the injection in and the pet may struggle when they get poked a second time.
They can enter an "excitement" phase of anesthesia if the drug goes too slowly through their body (can be from many factors) in which they may struggle or become vocal until they are more completely under.

I live in Perth Western Australia and I am 12 and I really love animals so i need to know some animal shelters i can do volunteer work at.
That’s great to hear that you love animals and care for their well-being.
You could always try the RSPCA, they even have a WA website where it has information on volunteering.
http://www.rspcawa.asn.au/foster_volunteer_asset/volunteer.html
There are also various other shelters im sure you could find and help out at, but i do not know them. Perhaps a Google Search for "Perth animal shelters" will give you some information. Im surprised you have such a love and dedication for animals at your age, but you may still be too young to be accepted for this kind of volunteer work but i hope you succeed in helping out like you want so good luck and good day.

In Animal Shelter, players step into the role of Shelter Director, responsible for the health and happiness for a host of cuddly creatures including cats, dogs, turtles, hamsters, and bunnies. In this simulation game, players must feed and clean up after the animals and give them medicine and affection. Based on how well they do this, they will earn money to spend at the animal shelter. Players also need to create advertisements for each animal to help get them adopted, taking photographs, writing a short description, and deciding where to place the advertisement online, in a newspaper, or on television while keeping their overall budget in consideration. While animal rescue and adoption processes are different all around the world, Animal Shelter provides an easy-to-learn and accessible simulation experience for all audiences to enjoy playing.
