How old do you have to be to volunteer at a pet shelter in Canada?

I reeeeeeeally want to volunteer and help out the animals, I don’t care what it takes to get there or how long it will take, I just really want to because I LOVE animals. The problem is, I’m only 14. If you’ve volunteered before, how old were you? If nobody knows, I can call but I’m kind of shy..

Sorry, but you are going to have to call. Every animal shelter has different rules, even within Canada, regarding the minimum age required for volunteering. To work with animals at a nonprofit, you are going to have to sit through an orientation and training, so make sure you have reliable transportation lined up for such, and be on time — how seriously you treat your pre-volunteering activities often determines whether or not you get to do the kind of volunteering you want to do.

If you cannot find any shelters, humane societies, animal rescue groups or others than allow volunteers at your age, consider what you could do support their work until you are of age; for instance, you could join their email lists and Facebook pages and what not, so that you become knowledgeable about their work, and you can then post about their work to your own FaceBook page and other online social profiles to educate your friends.

You could also try starting your own pet-sitting service in your neighborhood — walking and feeding dogs, and feeding cats, fish, and other pets in people’s homes when they are away. If you made flyers offering your service and made sure every house within a three block radius got such, I bet you would get at least one client right away.

Please Adopt A Shelter Pet

This is a video to show my wonderful cat Snickers. Like everyone she has a story. About a year ago I was at work. I work for an animal shelter and this little four week old kitten that was half starved was brought in. I felt an immediate bond with her and without question I took her home. Everyone at work felt like she was too far gone and suggested euthanasia. After several sleepless nights of round the clock bottle feeding she began to get stronger and healthier. After a visit at the vet she was given a clean bill of health. She’s even FIV negative. Almost a year later she is still able to surprise me with the things she does and brings a smile to my face every day. I know she is grateful for me for saving her but I am so grateful for her. I’ve some bad days and to come home and see her waiting for me is the greatest gift anyone can have.

Ask anyone who works at an animal shelter and they will tell you that it is sickening how many animals are without homes. At our shelter our adoption numbers are going up, but it isn’t enough. Everyday thousands of unwanted animals are euthanized simply because there aren’t enough homes for them. If you buy from breeders or pet stores you are only fueling the need for unwanted animals. If you want a pure bred, there is one sitting at a shelter right now. I think the average was that 25% of animal intakes are pure bred. Until people take responsibility for their pets nothing will change. The first step is to spay and neuter. Make sure your animals have identification.

And for all you breeders out there. This isn’t a way to make money. The responsible breeders barely break even. After vet visits, food, and shots it comes up to a huge bill. If you breed and don’t care about the health of the dog only the price tag you’ve put on them, shame on you. These are living souls who deserve a life of love. Love your animals for who they are and not how much money they can get for you.

I want to volunteer at the winnipeg pet rescue shelter?

Hi,
I really want to do some volunteering that includes dog walking this summer.
I’ve been thinking about working at Winnipeg’s Pet Rescue shleter because they always seem like they could use some extra help. SO I was wondering if anyone could tell me…
when the hours I could work as a volunteer are (how long would I work each day?)
How is the dog walking job?
What are the best volunteer jobs there?
Is everyone who works there very nice?
How would the volunteer sign up process work out?
Thanks!

Good for you, you must love animals to want to do this.

Here is their web site with a section for volunteering.
