How old should we reach in order to be a volunteer for a pet shelter?
I’m 12 and i want to be a volunteer for Humane Society in Huntington BEach. But i’m afraid that i’m too young to be a volunteer. Does anyone know about this? I’m kinda experienced with dogs. I used to have 2 dogs in the past so i know how to take care of dogs. And can anyone tell me what a VOLUNTEER does? Walk the dogs, feed them, bathe them, take care of them? Please help
Minimum age at the Orange County Humane Society in Huntington Beach is 18 years of age: http://ochumanesociety.com/custom_content/c_88885_pawticipate_volunteer_programs.html If your parents consent, it’s possible that your family could volunteer as a foster home. You would take care of animals that need extra TLC until they are able to be put up for adoption.

you have to be 16! im 15 and it annoys me too because i know im responsible enough to be able to clean their cages and the like, but it has to do with liability. if someone as young as you happens to get bitten or hurt while working with the dogs it can be a huge issue.

Volunteers do a number of different tasks depending on what is needed at a local shelter or clinic. This can range from dog walking and cat sitting, to socializing with the animals and socializing with the people who are interested in adoption.
I’m not sure about the age limit though: You would have to call your local Humane Society and ask them if there is one, since there is a liability with you being so young.
Remember, it never hurts to ask.

It depends on the shelter. Most require you to be 18 to be able to volunteer on your own. Some do allow minors, but you have to have a parent or other adult with you. There might be limitations on what you are allowed to do.
What you do depends on how long you have been there, your age, training and interests. When you start, you will probably be cleaning cages, doing laundry and other similar tasks. You might get to play with the cats, rabbits and other small animals. You probably won’t be walking dogs as some are strong and might not have much training. it can be a liability issue for minors to work with any animals.
It is best to contact your local shelter to find out their policy. Each one is different.
