They climb over houses, cars, debris, and run through a city that looks like Hiroshima, carrying 40-pound sacks of food and buckets of water… all to feed and rescue pets left behind. It is horrific, and heart-lifting to see these valiant, selfless efforts… volunteers giving their heart and soul to save animals in the disaster zone…

However feeding is not always enough. And there is too little support for these volunteers to do more.

On Wednesday, August 29, the second annniversary of Hurricane Katrina, Scotlund Haisley and his team from the Washington Animal Rescue League arrived in Washington, D.C., after a 20-hour drive from New Orleans. They carried 100 animals rescued from Louisiana. This is the first of their stories.

A tribute to Katrina Animal Rescue…..
Especially those volunteering at Camp Katrina, located in Tylertown, MS. and those working at the Winn Dixie in downtown New Orleans.

The pictures of the dogs in the water came from various associated press releases after the hurricane. Those pictures were what made me decide to head down to help. Myself, two other technicians and a veterinarian from where I work all headed down, not knowing what we’d find.

We arrived just as the camp was getting started. We were the first medical team in the camp. There were people from all walks of life, all races, all religion, all political views. It didn’t matter…we were all there for one goal: To rescue and save the animals who fell victim to Hurricane Katrina.

The other pictures in the clip were taken by various volunteers in the camp: Lisa & Tammy, Chuck, Carebear, Gonzo, Kimmy and myself. The song is by the country band “Sugarland” and called “Stand Back Up”. I heard it for the first time after arriving home from Tylertown. It reminded me so much of what these animals went through I cried. I knew I would one day make a video using the song. After all they’d been through…once rescued and given the medical attention they needed they stood back up and were happy as could be. So…this is also a tribute to the resilience of those animals, and in memory of those who didn’t make it.

Amazing Animal Rescue Project – The Katrina Promise

When Katrina hit, an incredible group of dedicated volunteers came to East New Orleans facing incredible hardships to rescue over 3,000 pets. MuttShack ran a MASH unit, pet shelter and an aggressive ward clinic with Jim Crosby. They stayed and lobbied in support of Senator Fontenot’s Pets Act winning the right for people to evacuate with their pets. But the crisis is not over. The act did not provide for all the supplies equipment and training that is necessary pre-storm. Even though people will be evacuated with their pets, equipment, supplies and trained volunteers are still desperately needed.
