Animal Shelter Standards: Governor’s Weekly Message – August 6, 2010

Governor Jack Markell explains the new Delaware law he signed this summer creating first-of-their-kind animal shelter standards for Delaware.

The law puts Delaware in the forefront of shelter standards in the country by ensuring that shelters provide proper veterinary care to animals, take reasonable steps to increase the likelihood of animal adoption, and address euthanasia procedures and methods.

Markell also shares the story of an abandoned pet they brought into their home.

The law was sponsored by State Senator Patricia Blevins (D-Elsmere) and championed in the House by State Representative Melanie George (D-Bear/Newark). All five animal shelters in the state– Delaware SPCA, Kent County SPCA, Delaware Humane Association, Faithful Friends and Safe Havens Shelter – support the new standards.

Woman Shelters Animals Injured in China Quake

PlusWoman Shelters Animals Injured in China QuakeWoman Shelters Animals Injured in China QuakeThe Associated PressA former businesswoman has created something rare in China: a private animal shelter. For 11 years, 60-year-old Yunlian Chen has been rescuing strays off the streets, including about 100 from area hardest hit by last month’s earthquake. (June 28)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] This is one of China’s lucky survivors. His hind legs crushed after a seven-point-nine magnitude earthquake hit the Sichuan province last May …killing nearly 70-thousand people. But his luck didn’t stop there. He was picked up by this woman …And brought to her private animal shelter … Where he’s learning to get around again. [Notes:NATS UP WOMAN]It’s here where Chen Yunlian (yoon-LI-ahn) … a former businesswoman cares for about 900 dogs. She rescued about 100 of them from cities hardest hit by the quake.Like other dogs with crippled hind legs … This one now walks with the help of a wheelchair device made of P-V-C pipes. [Notes:NATS chen] Chen said her shelter is close to full capacity. She spends nearly nine-thousand dollars each month on dog food, salaries and supplies. …. much of that money she says comes out of her own pocket.Private animal shelters are still extremely rare in China … Dog ownership has grown in popularity as the Chinese become wealthier… But many people don’t have the strong emotional attachment to the animals that’s common in the West. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****)
